TOPIK II · Reading · Questions 19–24 · Level 4

Paired questions (connector, idiom, feeling)

읽고 두 문항 (접속어·관용 표현·심정)

TOPIK II Reading Q19–24: three passages with two questions each. Q19–20: a connector or adverb gap + the main topic; Q21–22: an idiom gap + the matching statement; Q23–24: the narrator’s feeling in the underlined sentence + the matching statement (usually a personal essay or story).

Test tips

  1. Read the questions first to know which pair you are on, then read the passage ONCE and answer both – don’t reread from the top for the second question.
  2. Connector (19): check the relation between the sentences before and after the gap – adding (게다가, 또한), contrast/turn (그런데, 하지만), result (그래서, 따라서), example (예를 들어). The topic (20) is usually in the last sentence, especially one with '-아/어야 한다', '-는 것이 좋다' or '필요하다'.
  3. Idiom (21): read the examples just before or after the gap to work out the meaning needed, then pick the idiom that matches. Learn common ones: 발 벗고 나서다, 발등에 불이 떨어지다, 손이 크다, 귀가 얇다, 머리를 맞대다, 하늘의 별 따기, 눈코 뜰 새 없다.
  4. Feeling (23): look at the action in the underlined sentence (blushing, a sigh of relief, gripping something, staring at an empty chair…) and the situation just before it. Learn the emotion words: 쑥스럽다, 다행스럽다, 허전하다, 벅차다, 조마조마하다, 서운하다, 홀가분하다, 뿌듯하다.
  5. Matching statement (22, 24): traps usually change one small detail (a number, a time, who did what, 'borrowed' to 'bought', 'at first' to 'from the start'). Check each option against the exact sentence in the text.
  6. Time budget: about 2.5–3 minutes per passage (two questions).

Worked examples

Translation

These days you can easily see public bicycles all over the city. You find a nearby rental station with a smartphone app, borrow a bike and return it to a station near your destination. It is especially convenient for short trips from a bus or subway stop to home or work. ( ), as public bikes have increased, problems needing solutions have also appeared. More and more bikes are left anywhere, blocking pedestrians, or are handled carelessly and break down. For public bikes to become the citizens’ ‘feet’, each user needs to treat them with care, like their own belongings.

( )에 들어갈 알맞은 것을 고르십시오.

Explanation

Step 1: read the sentences before and after the gap. Before: an advantage (very convenient); after: '해결해야 할 문제' (problems to solve) – opposite directions. Step 2: you need a connector that turns to a contrasting point → '그런데' (however). Step 3: eliminate. '그래서' (so) is wrong because the problems are not a result of convenience. '게다가' (moreover) adds a point in the same direction, but this is the opposite. '예를 들면' (for example) is wrong because the next sentence is not an example of the previous one.

위 글의 주제로 가장 알맞은 것을 고르십시오.

Explanation

Step 1: the main idea is often in the last sentence, especially one with '-려면 … 필요하다' (to…, you need…). It says that for public bikes to become the citizens’ ‘feet’, users must treat them like their own. Step 2: the text moves from advantages → problems → solution, so the topic is the solution at the end – option 4. Step 3: options 1 and 3 are only details from the beginning, not the main idea. Option 2 is never mentioned.
