TOPIK II · Listening · Questions 17–20 · Level 4

Choose the speaker’s main idea

중심 생각 고르기

TOPIK II Listening Q17–20: listen to a short dialogue (17–19) or an interview (20) and choose the main idea of one speaker (usually the man). It tests whether you can separate one person's opinion from details and from the other speaker's view.

Test tips

  1. Check whose idea is asked (남자 or 여자) and focus only on that person's turn; an option stating the other speaker's view is the most common trap.
  2. The main idea usually comes in the last sentence of the speaker's turn, or right after 그런데 / 하지만 / 그래도 once they have partly conceded the other person's point.
  3. Listen for opinion endings: -아야/어야 해요, -는 게 좋아요, -는 게 중요한 것 같아요, -다고 생각해요, -잖아요, -거든요.
  4. Rule out options that only repeat an example or detail (a number, an object, a place) – the answer is the general point those details support.
  5. Q20 is an interview: the host's question sets the topic, and the expert's answer usually ends with '-다고 생각합니다' – that is the main idea.
  6. Each item is heard once with about 15–20 seconds to answer: read the four options before the audio starts, answer right after it ends, then move on to read the next item.

Explanation

Questions 17–20 ask for the man's main idea, so focus on his turn, especially its last sentence. He doubts choosing by stars because some shops trade discounts for good reviews, and concludes '후기는 참고만 하고 직접 가 보고 판단하는 편이에요' – use reviews only as a reference and judge by going yourself. So the answer is 2. Option 4 is the woman's view ('후기가 도움이 되잖아요'), a typical trap. Option 1 contradicts his argument, and option 3 only borrows the 'discount' detail rather than stating his point.
