Sentence insertion

Read a passage with four positions ( ㉠ )–( ㉣ ) (Q39–41) and choose where the given sentence fits best, using logical flow and cohesive devices.

Test tips

  1. Read the given sentence first and circle its opening words: connectors (그러나, 그래서, 다만, 반면에, 특히, 이처럼, 그러자) and demonstratives (이, 그, 이러한, 이곳, 그마저도).
  2. A demonstrative needs its referent IMMEDIATELY before it: '이러한 문제' requires a problem in the previous sentence; '이곳' requires the place to be introduced already.
  3. Also check the sentence RIGHT AFTER each position: if it starts with 예를 들어, 즉, 특히, 그 결과, 이 문제…, the given sentence must supply what that sentence depends on.
  4. Summaries (이처럼, -는 셈이다) and limitations (다만) usually go at the end; definitions and topic-introducing sentences usually go at ㉠.
  5. Check the logical order: general → specific (example), cause → effect, problem → solution → limitation. A position that reverses this order is wrong.
  6. Suggested time: 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes per question; reread the passage with the sentence inserted to confirm.

Worked examples

도시의 빈 땅이나 아파트 옥상에 채소를 기르는 도시 텃밭이 늘고 있다. ( ㉠ ) 처음에는 직접 기른 채소를 먹을 수 있다는 점 때문에 시작하는 사람이 많다. ( ㉡ ) 그런데 텃밭을 가꾸다 보면 뜻밖의 즐거움을 얻게 된다. ( ㉢ ) 실제로 텃밭이 생긴 뒤 이웃끼리 인사를 나누는 일이 늘었다는 아파트 주민들이 많다. ( ㉣ )
Translation

Urban gardens, where vegetables are grown on vacant city land or apartment rooftops, are increasing. ( ㉠ ) At first many people start because they can eat vegetables they grew themselves. ( ㉡ ) But as you tend a garden, you gain an unexpected pleasure. ( ㉢ ) In fact, many apartment residents say neighbours greet each other more since the garden appeared. ( ㉣ )

Explanation

Step 1: analyse the given sentence. The ending '-는 것이다' shows it explains something just mentioned, and its content – getting close to neighbours – is a kind of pleasure. Step 2: find what it explains: '뜻밖의 즐거움을 얻게 된다' (you gain an unexpected pleasure) does not say what the pleasure is, so an explanation must follow. Step 3: check the sentence after ㉢: '실제로 ... 이웃끼리 인사를 나누는 일이 늘었다' is a real-life example of neighbours growing closer. So the answer is ㉢. At ㉡ it would come before the 'unexpected pleasure' is mentioned; at ㉣ the explanation would follow its own example, reversing the 'explanation → example' order.
