Long text – topic and gap

Read a long argumentative or expository text (Q44–45): choose the topic of the whole text and the content that best fills the gap.

Test tips

  1. Topic: read the first sentence and the last two first; the thesis is usually in a closing sentence ending in -아야 한다, -ㄹ 필요가 있다, -는 것이다, or right after 그러나/하지만.
  2. Eliminate three kinds of wrong option: details/examples (true but narrow), the view of 'some people' that the writer rejects (어떤 이들은…, 일부에서는…), and overgeneralisations (모두, 반드시, 즉시).
  3. Gap: read the sentences before and after it; a preceding connector (따라서, 결국, 그렇다면) marks the gap as a conclusion, and the following sentence often gives concrete examples that explain the gap.
  4. Watch for negation and contrast around the gap: '반드시 ( ) 것은 아니다', 'A가 아니라 ( )' – the gap must hold the idea opposite to what the writer supports for the sentence to make sense.
  5. Put each option into the gap and reread the sentence and the next one; the right option must also fit the topic you chose for Q44.
  6. Suggested time: about 3 minutes for the pair.

Translation

News that honeybees are disappearing means more than just a fall in honey production. Many of the major crops humans eat bear fruit only when insects, honeybees among them, carry their pollen. A good number of the fruits and nuts on our tables, such as apples, almonds and strawberries, depend on insect pollination. Yet in recent decades, whole bee colonies vanishing at once have been reported around the world. Scientists cite as causes the overuse of pesticides, shifts in flowering times due to climate change, and food shortages caused by large-scale monoculture. The fact that no single cause explains it makes the problem all the harder to solve. In some regions hand pollination, with people dabbing pollen on each flower with a brush, has even appeared, but this not only costs enormous money and labour, it also cannot fully replace what insects have been doing. In the end, protecting honeybees is a matter of ( ). This is why efforts to reduce pesticide use and create spaces where diverse flowers bloom in cities and the countryside are urgent.

Explanation

Approach: for a topic question, read the first sentence and the last two closely, where the thesis usually sits. The opening says bee loss is about more than honey, the middle explains that crops rely on insect pollination, and the end concludes '노력이 시급한 이유가 여기에 있다'. So the topic is that bee decline threatens our food and calls for active measures – option 3. Option 1 is wrong because hand pollination '온전히 대신하지도 못한다'. Option 2 names only one of several causes, while the text stresses '어느 하나의 원인만으로 설명할 수 없다'. Option 4 is about honey – exactly what the first sentence says is not the point.

Explanation

Approach: read the sentences before and after the gap. The previous sentence says humans cannot replace insect pollinators; the gap starts with '결국', so it sums up the text. From the start the writer links bees to 'the fruits and nuts on our tables', so protecting bees is '우리의 식탁을 지키는' – option 1. Option 2 goes back to honey. Option 3 (controlling insect numbers) is not the writer's idea. Option 4 points the wrong way, since monoculture (fewer crop types) is one of the causes.
