Writer’s attitude

Read an opinion piece on a policy or social trend (Q46–47): choose the writer's attitude in the underlined part and the statement that matches the text.

Test tips

  1. Read the underlined sentence first and focus on its ending, which carries the attitude: -ㄹ지 의문이다 (doubt), -ㄹ 수도 있다 (concern), 지나치게 낙관적이다 (scepticism), -는 데 의의가 있다 (positive evaluation), -아야 한다 (urging), -는 것은 무책임하다 (criticism).
  2. When the sentence has '-지만' or starts with '그러나/다만', the second part is the writer's view; the first part is usually someone else's opinion – an option built from the first part is the classic trap.
  3. Learn the attitude verbs used in options: 우려하다 (be concerned), 비판하다 (criticise), 경계하다 (be wary), 회의적이다 (sceptical), 촉구하다 (urge), 긍정적으로 평가하다 (rate positively), 안타까워하다 (regret), 기대하다 (hope).
  4. Identify the target of the attitude: is the writer criticising the policy or the citizens? The right attitude aimed at the wrong target is still wrong.
  5. Content match: underline scope words in the options (모든, 대부분, 이미, 전혀, 일부) and compare – small shifts in scope or timing (under review ≠ already in force) are the most common reason to eliminate.
  6. Suggested time: about 2 minutes 30 seconds for the pair.

Worked examples

Translation

It is no longer unusual to see unmanned ordering machines, so-called kiosks, greeting customers instead of people – not only in fast-food outlets and cafés but also in hospitals and community centres. It results from businesses wanting to cut labour costs meeting consumers who want to order quickly without queuing. Indeed, many young people say tapping a screen is actually easier than talking to staff. But not everyone welcomes this change. According to one survey, over half of people aged 70 and above have given up ordering partway through using a kiosk. Small print, complicated steps and the glances of people waiting behind them turn the screen into a high wall. <u>If a technology that puts convenience first is making it hard for some people even to buy a meal, it is doubtful whether it can be called real progress.</u> For the benefits of technology to reach everyone, screens with larger text and voice guidance must be provided, along with a counter where people can get human help whenever they need it.

Explanation

Approach: read the underlined sentence and focus on the ending that carries the attitude. It ends with '진정한 발전이라고 부를 수 있을지 의문이다' (it is doubtful whether it is real progress) – a questioning, sceptical stance. What is doubted is convenience-first technology that leaves some people unable even to buy a meal, i.e. technology that excludes people – option 4. Option 1 is the businesses' gain, which the writer does not praise. Option 2 is the trap: the writer blames the design (small print, complex steps), not older people. Option 3 is background from the opening, not the attitude in the underlined part.

Explanation

Approach: check each option against the text, watching scope words like '대부분', '주로', '모든'. Option 2 is the opposite: many young people find screens easier. Option 3 is wrong because kiosks are also in hospitals and community centres ('병원과 주민 센터에서도'). Option 4 is wrong: voice guidance is what the writer says must be added, so it is not yet universal.
