남자:박사님, 요즘 아이들은 잠깐이라도 심심하면 바로 스마트폰이나 영상을 찾는다고 하는데요. 아이가 심심해하면 부모가 뭔가 할 거리를 마련해 줘야 하지 않을까요?

Doctor, they say children these days reach for a smartphone or videos the moment they're even slightly bored. When a child is bored, shouldn't parents provide something for them to do?

여자:많은 부모님들이 그렇게 생각하시죠. 하지만 저는 아이들에게 심심한 시간이 꼭 필요하다고 봅니다. 할 일이 없는 상태가 되면 뇌는 스스로 재미있는 것을 찾기 시작합니다. 빈 상자로 집을 만들거나 혼자 이야기를 지어내는 것도 바로 그런 순간에 나오죠. 실제로 한 실험에서 지루한 일을 15분 동안 한 사람들이 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 창의력 검사에서 더 다양한 아이디어를 냈습니다. 그런데 심심할 틈도 없이 학원과 영상으로 시간을 채우면 아이들은 이런 기회를 잃게 됩니다. 그러니 아이가 ‘심심해’라고 말할 때 바로 해결해 주기보다 스스로 놀 거리를 찾을 때까지 조금 기다려 주시는 게 좋습니다.

Many parents think so. But I believe children really need time to be bored. When there's nothing to do, the brain starts looking for something interesting by itself. Making a house out of an empty box or making up stories alone come out of exactly those moments. In fact, in one experiment, people who did a boring task for 15 minutes came up with more varied ideas in a creativity test than those who didn't. But if their time is filled with cram schools and videos, with no room to be bored, children lose these chances. So when your child says 'I'm bored', rather than solving it straight away, it's better to wait a little until they find something to play with on their own.
