TOPIK I · Reading · Questions 46–48 · Level 2

Choose the main idea

중심 생각 고르기

Read a three-sentence text (Q46–48) and choose the main idea: what the writer wants to say, feels or wishes.

Test tips

  1. The main idea is usually the last sentence, especially after 그래서, 하지만, 그래도 or 그런데.
  2. The key must cover the whole text; concrete examples and reasons (making coffee at home, sending emails) are only support.
  3. Look for opinion endings: -아/어야 합니다, -는 것이 좋습니다, -(으)면 좋겠습니다, -다고 생각했습니다, -기 때문입니다.
  4. Eliminate options that are true but narrow (one detail), exaggerated (a total ban) or contrary to the text.
  5. Unlike Q43–45, a 'true' statement can still be wrong here if it isn't the main point.

Worked examples

저는 아침에 일찍 일어나서 공부합니다. 아침에는 조용해서 공부가 잘됩니다. 그래서 저는 아침 시간을 아주 좋아합니다.
Translation

I get up early in the morning and study. Mornings are quiet, so studying goes well. That's why I really like the morning hours.

Explanation

Main-idea items differ from true/false items: the answer must sum up the whole text, usually the final sentence after '그래서'. The writer gets up early to study, finds mornings quiet and productive, and '그래서 ... 아침 시간을 아주 좋아합니다'. In short, the writer likes studying in the morning (option 4). Option 1 contradicts '일찍 일어나서'. Option 2 swaps morning for evening. Option 3 is about exercise, which is not in the text.
