The first action is completed, then a second, often opposite one follows (입었다가 벗다) or an unwanted result. Both clauses share the subject.
例句
코트를 입었다가 더워서 벗었어요.
I put on my coat, then took it off because it was hot.
도서관에 갔다가 문이 닫혀서 돌아왔어요.
I went to the library but came back because it was closed.
찬 음식을 먹었다가 배탈이 났어요.
I ate cold food and got an upset stomach.
