Signs and safety marks

표지판·안전 표시 이해하기

Understand safety signs and symbols at factories, building sites and public places (prohibition, warning, mandatory, guidance).

Test tips

  1. Classify the sign by colour and shape first: red slashed circle = PROHIBITION (-(으)면 안 됩니다, -지 마십시오); yellow triangle = WARNING (조심하십시오, 주의); blue circle = MANDATORY (꼭/반드시 ~하십시오); green = SAFETY / GUIDANCE (비상구, first aid).
  2. Knowing the family eliminates wrong-type options at once (a green sign is never a prohibition); only then read the symbol.
  3. Learn the words printed on signs: 금지, 엄금, 주의, 경고, 착용, 비상구, 관계자 외 출입 금지, 인화성, 긴급.
  4. Common traps: same symbol with the opposite meaning (보안경을 쓰십시오 vs 안경을 벗고), or a misread symbol (ear defenders vs headphones, emergency shower vs staff shower).
  5. Wearing verbs: 쓰다 (helmet, goggles, mask), 끼다 (gloves, earplugs), 신다 (shoes), 입다 (clothes, life jacket, hi-vis vest).

Worked examples

a red circle with a flame crossed out, labelled '화기 엄금' (no open flames)

다음 표지가 나타내는 의미로 알맞은 것을 고르십시오.

Explanation

Step 1: identify the sign family by shape and colour. A red circle with a slash is always a PROHIBITION, so the answer should look like '-(으)면 안 됩니다' or '-지 마십시오'. Step 2: look at the symbol — a flame, so using fire is forbidden: option 2. Option 1 describes an evacuation sign (green), option 3 an extinguisher-location sign (red with an extinguisher), and option 4 matches no standard sign. Remember: '화기 엄금' = open flames strictly forbidden.
