Thanks to the first clause, a bad outcome was avoided. Attaches to the stem, usually past (-았/었기에 망정이지); the main clause is often -(으)ㄹ 뻔했다 or -았/었을 것이다. Nouns take (이)기에 망정이지.

미리 예약했기에 망정이지 자리가 없을 뻔했어요.
Good thing we booked ahead, or there'd have been no seats.
안전벨트를 맸기에 망정이지 크게 다칠 뻔했다.
